Brief Description:
Programs Offered/ Facilities/Resources:
The Telus World of Science in Calgary is currently hosting the Titanic Artifact Exhibition from February 4th to June 27th, 2011. This exhibition consists of numerous artifacts recovered from the Titanic which allow us to appreciate and understand the experience of those who travelled on the ship. The Creative Kids Museum is free with admission and immerses children in a world of art, science and technology. All students will be offered additional interpretive programming that will take place on the Exhibition floor; this includes activities such as building their own boat. The Discovery Dome Theater is also available for students to view either Shackelton’s Antarctic Adventure, or Titanic Tales.
The facility is equipped with a cafeteria, wheelchair access, elevators, paid parking, and tour guides which are located throughout the exhibition.
There are audio guides available for the cost of $5.00 which would be a useful resource for a teacher or chaperone.

9. Lunch Procedures (Amy here is some info)


We ask students to bring only their lunch bags and NOT their backpacks as storage is limited. Also, TELUS World of Science-Calgary strongly encourages students to bring only ‘waste free lunches’. This involves lunch that contains no throw away packaging and produces minimal food waste. Students are asked to put food in reusable containers and drink from refillable bottles. Please help us reduce the amount of garbage TELUS World of Science Calgary produces!

Limited food offerings will be available for purchase.

Space to eat lunch is on a first come, first serve basis. Seating is available on the first and second floor. Students are also permitted to eat in the Discovery Dome, though NO food or beverage may be consumed in the Exhibition.

Pre-Trip Activities:
Social Studies
Students will watch Titanic: Birth of a Legend (English/Discovery Channel Version) Part 1 which can be retrieved from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C32eDRBD-R0&feature=related This will give a general overview of the history of the ship, people and culture of that time.
ELA
Students will write a paragraph pretending they are a passenger aboard the Titanic. In a three sentence summary they will explain the reason why they are travelling.



On-Site Activities:
Science – Sarah, we are not sure what the science outcomes are so make sure they fit with this activityJ
Students will build a boat in the Engineering Corner which is located within the exhibition. Materials will be provided onsite by a leader from the center who will organize and offer assistance throughout the activity. Students will pay attention to the different components of a boat and why they are important.
Social Studies
Students will obtain a Boarding Pass from the front desk which contains a brief description of one passenger, the date of departure, and final destination. It also includes whether they were first, second or third class passengers. The students use their pass to find out if their passenger lived or died when the Titanic sank.
Students will need to find information on an Albertan couple who went through this experience and how their experience might have been different from other passengers aboard Titanic.

Self-Reflection Journal Entry- Students get to reflect on learning experience by answering the following 3 Questions: What did you learn from the exhibition? What was your favourite part of the exhibition and why? How would you explain the Titanic experience to a friend?
Social Studies
Class Discussion where students are able to share ideas about their boarding pass information which they received at the site. This pass includes a brief description of a passenger or crew member onboard the Titanic and whether or not they survived. The discussion will pertain to the experiences that each individual went through and how they differed from each other. Relate these ideas to the impact of these experiences on history and society.
Mathematics
Students will find the date of departure on their Boarding Pass and will rewrite it in a variety of formats.

Safety Precautions:
· All supervisors and staff are fully trained and qualified (eg. Bus driver, venue staff), parents must consent to the transportation and the risks associated with it.
· The location and facilities meet the applicable health and safety standards
· All students will be adequately supervised with 1 adult per 10 students
(Teacher and two parent volunteers)
· A small First Aid kit should be taken on the journey in case any children happen to injure themselves
· Students must move carefully while moving through the gallery and respect the facility’s rules while interacting with glass displays (ex. No running or no taking pictures)
· Supervisors have access to all pertinent health information for every student (ex. allergies, medical conditions, medications, dietary restrictions, and emergency contacts)
Equipment to take:
Any equipment used in the activity has been inspected and is deemed to be appropriate, safe, and well maintained.
Bring a camera to take pictures of the entire class outside of the exhibit. A cell phone is also a necessity in the case of an emergency.
What to wear:
Provide name tags for everyone to wear. You may want to create a way to identify students (ex. Clothing is colour coded) to help you keep track of your party. Ensure students are dressed comfortably and appropriately for the weather and are wearing running shoes since there will be a lot of walking.
Length of tour or activity:
Depending on whether you choose to have your class participate in extra activities such as watching a movie, the total tour should take about 3 hours.

Time Frame:
· We designed this field trip to occur in an integrated unit with the field trip taking place near the end of the unit. Since the activities are indoors and our objectives focus on fundamental knowledge and skills, this trip would be best suited during the fall months of the school year. We suggest the following time line:
9:00 am – Board school bus, ensure everyone is accounted for, and head to Calgary
10:30 am – Arrive at the Calgary Space and Science Center, assign each supervisor to the student groups they will be responsible for and remind the students of the facility’s rules.
11:00 am – Enter exhibit. You may choose to progress through the gallery as one large group or break off into three smaller groups.
12:00 am- Meet at the cafeteria for lunch. As students finish their lunch they can play in the Creative Kids Museum.

1:00 pm- Return to the Titanic exhibit for the second half. Students enter the last portion of the exhibit called Memorial and find their name printed on their ticket on the list of Titanic survivors or causalities. They will also read the stories found on the walls in the Memorial and discover one of them is about an Albertan couple.
2:00 pm- Titanic Tales located in the Discovery Dome Theatre: Students listen to true stories of passengers portrayed by live actors on the stage.
3:00 pm- Board the bus and head home to Red Deer. Provide a snack.
4:30 pm – Arrive home and parents pick up their children. Plan arrangements for students upon returning from the field trip by contacting parents to come up pick up their children.

**All of these outcomes relate to my section on lunch at the Space and Science Center because they have a policy on reducing waste so I think this applies great to some science outcomes for grade 4!!!!!!
